I decided that I wanted to do a flyer for this part of the genre. I feel as though since my topic is related to clubs, a lot of students come across flyers that are related to clubs either talking about an upcoming event (like the three examples I found) or a flyer asking for students to join in on a meeting. Each of these examples I found to have a lot of color, as well as attention-seeking headings and fonts. That is what I tried to do with my genre. I tried using the Bloomsburg University colors because Homecoming is all about Bloomsburg and supporting the school, so why not do this using the school colors. I also feel since my flyer is related to getting students invlolved in clubs, I thought it would be best to engage viewers with asking questions. The examples I found also showed a time, date and loctation of the event so I also incorporated this in my flyer. I also felt that real life pictures was something I wanted to include on the flyer because it gives students a preview of what is done in the club.

Reflection

My focus for this genre was to create a flyer regarding a club that is offered on campus. I decided to do a flyer on the Homecoming Committee because I am a member of this club. It is also something that I feel new students would want to be a part of. Entering college, students may not have a clue about what clubs they want to be a part of, or which group of friends they want to be close with. The common saying is “College is where you find yourself”. It is your choice to believe in this if you want to. Which is another point to think about as well, college is about making choices, more importantly, making your own choices. The greatest privilege about being in college is having the freedom to make your own decisions and act upon them however you will.

Flyers are seen all over campus. It is sometimes the best way to communicate to students about upcoming events or activities to take part in. In fact, if it weren’t for flyers sometimes I would’ve never discovered some of the clubs I take part in today.

How to appeal to students the most to students is the hardest part. There are so many flyers out there promoting clubs, so many events out there that are wanting participants, but how can one piece of paper reach out to so many students? In my approach of creating a flyer, I figured since it was a Homecoming flyer, it should be supportive of the colors of Bloomsburg (maroon and gold). Homecoming is all about school spirit and making students feel welcomed back to school, therefore the flyer must also be welcoming. That is why I felt it was important to include real pictures of events that the Homecoming Committee takes part in such as the parade and the Homecoming Football Game. This was my first year participating in the Homecoming Committee, and the feeling I got of planning something that students depend so greatly on was the same feeling I wanted to portray through the flyer to get the students interested. The open-ended questions posed to the viewers I felt would attract students to thinking that maybe Homecoming really is the club for them.

Genre #2: Brochure

In my version of my brochure I decided to include pictures like the first and second example of a brochure. Brochures can be very informative, that is why I felt showing quotes that other students said would be sufficient. It gives parents feedback on actual statements other students said about the clubs. In these brochure models they included a lot of information. The alignment of the text also played an important role in these models because it shows the professionalism of the brochures. I liked the first example layout with the colors as well as the images, it really made the brochure stand out. Pictures are important because it is a way of informing parents how the students can get involved. I decided to choose the families of students who are entering college at Bloomsburg University. I felt this would be best suited to help inform parents the activities that students could get involved in as well as the experiences that they can gain from them.

Reflection
Even though students themselves play the main role in their education and choosing the college that they want to attend, parents are also very important in shaping their children’s decisions about college, especially if their parents are paying for their child’s education.

Having a brochure with information about clubs I thought was the best approach for informing parents about clubs that are offered at Bloomsburg University. A brochure should not only be appealing to the audience, but I feel it should really reach out to the parents with information that will be useful for them. Visiting colleges is an important time in a student’s life, but it is also the most important time for a parent as well. A parent wants what is best for their child to succeed. In order to prove that Bloomsburg University is the college that their child should choose, you must make sure the parents are informed about all of the school has to offer. Academics is the number one aspect, whether or not the school has the best programs for their majors, but outside of academics is a world just as important, life. What will their children be doing outside of classes? Most parents hope to think their children will study and do their coursework, but outside of this, parents want their students making the most of their college experiences, achieving more than just the average. One way their child can make themselves achieve more and become something more, is through their experiences. Clubs such as SCEC (student council for Exceptional Children) provide students with experiences that they can take with them for the rest of their life. But they are the experiences that future employers want to hear about, it is those experiences that make students become the people they search their life looking to find. A parent’s wish is to see their child happy, if they see that clubs can help students expand their learning outside the classroom, and benefit them in their future careers, they will make their decision about the college and maybe even the clubs they want to be a part of.

For my creation of a brochure I did my best to portray the message to parents that Bloomsburg has all there is to offer with Clubs. “The sky is your limit here at BU, what ever you choose, let it be your destiny.” I wanted parents to see that there is so much that Bloomsburg has for students to be a part of. Adding pictures also helped to add to this affect because I feel that pictures are worth a thousand words, words can only do so much, but seeing it for yourself in a picture of a particular club, really opens your eyes to the reality of it all. I felt the colors of the brochure must be related to the colors of Bloomsburg. I also did not want to add too much information all on one brochure, but just enough to get the point across to parents that clubs are endless. I thought it would be a good idea to add interview responses of what clubs meant to some students at Bloomsburg because it helps to add to the validity of the information.

Criteria
For this genre I decided to make a newsletter. I felt that with the research I found I could transform it into something that would be more fun and interesting to read for an audience, especially if it were something to be displayed on a bulletin board. Looing at the above models I was able to get some good ideas of how I should use the proper colors and set-up of the page. Not every newsletter is the same, as you can tell from the second example that I found, this newsletter is actually in black and white, I think when the newsletter is in color it draws more attention to the viewers. I also like how these models provided the audience with photos. I think that these photos also help to tell the story. The headings for different sections of the newsletter also stand out using bold text as well as having the text in another color, this is important because it helps to tell the audience exactly the points you are trying to make. The alignment and spacing also plays a role in these models which I felt was a good idea because the readers need to be able to see the text in an organized manner without it being scattered.

Reflection
This genre was something I was not used to ever creating, it was something new and different to me, especially the fact that it was a satire. My main purpose was to inform students about clubs in a joking manner, expressing to them that clubs are a great experience to embrace in college, even if they may take up time in your day. I also tried expressing to the students that clubs are something that employers really look into. Academics is a main concern for students, but any student can sit in their room or at the library studying hours upon hours for school and succeed, but the most impressive students who will stand out to employers, is those who embraced every experience given to them. Also, prior experience is another part that potential employers look at when looking at hiring, they want students who have experience in that field. A lot of times it is the clubs that give students that chance to go into the community to find those experiences that will not only make you well-rounded in providing service to others, but getting knowledge about their field by actively participating in activities. For instance, a teaching club I am a part of PSEA (Pennsylvania State of Education Association) offers students the chance to enter the Public library and read to children. I wanted to portray to students that even though clubs can be time consuming, they re a true rewarding experience in every way possible through academics, as well as social.

I designed my newsletter using one of Bloomsburg’s colors (maroon) as well as the signature husky paws. I thought it would also be suitable to add photos of various clubs, especially the front picture with various t-shirts that represent clubs that students can be involved in. A newsletter is more about the information presented rather than the images, but the images and design is what adds appeal to the newsletter. If the newsletter does not pop-out at students, they are not going to take the time to read it. It must also be well-organized an consistent. Most importantly, I tried to make the newsletter clear and to the point so students can read it in a timely fashion.
